Audi produces 100% galvanised cars to prevent corrosion, and was the first mass-market vehicle to do so, following introduction of the process by Porsche, c.1975. Along with other precautionary measures, the full-body zinc coating has proved to be very effective in preventing rust. The body's resulting durability even surpassed Audi's own expectations…

Historical Facts and Memorable Years

The company was born in Germany over 100 years ago and has remained Deutschland-based to this day. Audi Automobilwerke GmbH (Audi Automobile Works) began manufacturing cars in 1910 and remained independent until the Great Depression. Because Audi's founder, August Horch, had left a 10-year-old company bearing his own name, he chose the Latin form of his name "Audi" for his new company, then joined with three other auto manufacturers in 1932 to form Auto Union. The sole survivor of that union, Audi, was purchased by Volkswagen in 1964.

In the early 1930s Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, head of design for Auto Union (parent company for Audi and Horch) started working on a 16-cylinder rear engine race car. Jointly with engineer Robert von Eberhorst, the Type C Streamliner was born in 1937. The aerodynamic design and futuristic bodywork came from tests carried out by the German government for airplanes. In a period of 3 days, Bernd Rose Meyer broke 15 world speed records in this car, including the track record of 237 mph, done at Avus in Berlin and then, on a stretch of highway near Frankfurt, he pushed the Streamliner to an incredible 254 mph.

Years later, the oil embargo in the 70's had made fuel consumption a concern for all car manufacturers. Reducing fuel consumption was a driving force at Audi because of the important goal to reduce the environmental damage caused by emissions. Audi gave proof to its pro-environment stance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. The Audi vision of the car for the Year 2000 was a deluxe saloon, a trend-setter because of its genuine innovations.

1983 marked another impressive step towards environmentally-friendly driving. Audi was the first German manufacturer to receive a general operating permit for cars with catalytic converter technology.

Audi exhibited two design studies in 1991.

Audi Quattro Spyder

The quattro Spyder was unveiled in Frankfurt

Audi Avus Chrome

and the all-aluminum body shell Avus quattro in Tokyo. Both caused a sensation. The most impressive feature was the aluminium construction which reduced weight and used resources more efficiently. Another example of how Audi pioneered new technologies to shape the future of the automobile.
